Buying the Best Beard Trimmer Reviews-Buyer Guide

Do you already sport a smart beard and mustache or do you like the idea of a neat goatee or sideburns? Beards have made an incredible fashion recovery over the last couple of years – just flick through the pages of any magazine and you’ll see stars sporting a range of beard styles.

If you have a beard but are looking for a new electric razor to keep it trim, neat and styled then jump straight to my quick chart comparing the best beard trimmers of the year. Want to find out more or are thinking of upgrading your trimmer? Take a look at my range of reviews of beard care equipment from leading brands including Wahl beard trimmer, Norelco, Remington, and Philips.

If you’re just starting to grow your beard – good luck! I took a summer holiday free of shaving to get mine into a presentable state and couldn’t have managed it without a new trimmer to stop me looking a total mess whenever I went out.

On this site, as you might have guessed, I get to write about my favourite male grooming subject – the joys of a beard and mustache! If you’re here to buy a present for a loved one and can’t quite believe that anyone is so geeky to write about beard trimmers, then think again… There are dozens of manufacturers and hundreds of different models of trimmer available. And I’ve made it my job to write about them!

Top Features To Look Out For

Some beard trimmers have special attachments that let you trim your sideburns, nose or ear hair. There are models others are designed to work with shaving foam in the wet, in case you want to shave in the shower. And plenty of models now feature pivoting heads that follow the contours of your face as you shave or trim your beard. To avoid mess and hair clippings, look for a model with an integrated vacuum system that sucks up the clippings as you shave (the Norelco QT4050 is a good example).

Battery Life

One really important feature of any beard trimmer is the battery: not only how long the battery charge lasts for but also how long it’ll take to charge up (many have a quick-charge feature so you don’t have to wait hours when you discover there’s no charge left just before you leave for work!)

Full charge time on some trimmers can be up to eight or more hours, but the newer high-spec models often not only have a quick charge (to provide enough power for a shave) but also fully charge in an hour or less.

Adjustable Shaving Head

Older trimmers and shavers had a fixed, stationary head. These still work well but because the shaving head doesn’t tilt or move, it doesn’t follow the contours of your face effectively so can irritate the skin and not provide such a close, smooth shave as a model with a movable or adjustable shaving head.

Take a look at the latest models from Philips Norelco or Braun which feature movable shaving heads so follow your face shape and provide a cleaner, closer, shave. Some advanced trimmers, such as the Philips Norelco BG2040 BodyGroom Pro, have a head that moves in 3D giving the closest shave or trim possible.

Shaver Head Attachments

Almost all trimmers and electric shavers come with a range of attachments that snap into place on the head of the razor. These provide specialist trimming tools to tackle nose and ear hair, body grooming or finer control of beard or mustache trimming.

Unfortunately, there are no standards for trimmer attachments (unlike, say, a USB port on your laptop) so an attachment from one shaver won’t normally work on another brand or model.

Summary

There are so many different models and varieties of beard trimmers, I’ve written this site and guides to help you find the best one for your needs. If you’re wondering how you should go about choosing the best beard trimmer for you, follow my reviews and you’ll read about the different features, pros and cons of models – and what to look out for when buying a new trimmer. Best of all, I’ve found some great discounts on the prices available on the web, so you’ll save as you shop.

Wahl Trimmer All In One

Wahl Trimmer All In OneThe Wahl Trimmer All-In-One Lithium Ion with T-blade and 6 position guides, claims to be the first green grooming tool because of its Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that has the smart technology to deliver 10 times the usual charge and 2 times the torque. Unfortunately, a trimmer is more than the sum of its battery and power.

Wahl Trimmer Review

The Wahl Trimmer All-In-One Lithium Ion is a smart grooming tool whose main bragging point is its industrial 3.7v, 750 mAh battery, and torque. It can recharge in 3 minutes and deliver 60 minutes of use on a full charge. It will also preserve battery life with an auto shut down whenever it is not being used, unlike other trimmers that will continue to consume energy if left plugged in. It comes with 6 position guide trimmers for ear, nose, eyebrow, and beard with dual foil shaver, 3 guide combs, and a T-blade trimmer.

It also offers 3 times more run time and twice the torque making it one of the more powerful grooming tools in the market. Unfortunately, the accessories and attachments are not as heavy-duty as the battery power and tend to break after months of use. It also cannot get wet or be washed down after use and will have to be oiled weekly. Also on the downside are the noise and vibration it generates when being used.

As a trimmer for occasional use, it is a good buy but if you plan on using it daily, it requires maintenance and careful cleaning to avoid clogging. The biggest concerns you will have with this trimmer are harnessing the power to avoid getting injured and working with flimsy attachments.

Summary

The main purpose of buying a trimmer is to get the styling done quickly and with the least amount of effort. The Wahl Trimmer All-In-One Lithium Ion is more about power and battery life. It works well with occasional use, not daily use because of the maintenance required that includes oiling and water-free cleaning.

Pros

  • Powerful motor with excellent battery technology
  • Excellent customer service
  • Good tool for occasional trimming

Cons

  • Noisy and tends to vibrate
  • Accessories and attachments are not as heavy duty as the battery
  • Requires maintenance and water-less cleaning which can cause clogging if not done properly

Remington MB4040 Mustache and Beard Trimmer

Remington MB4040 Lithium Ion Powered Men's Rechargeable Mustache Beard and Stubble Trimmer, BlackThe Remington MB4040 Lithium Ion Rechargeable moustache and beard trimmer are powered by rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries that deliver 120 minutes of cordless use. Its 3 blades are titanium coated and it has 9 length setting. It’s a good grooming tool for facial hair with minor issues that aren’t deal breakers.

Review of the Remington MB4040

The Remington MB4040 is a beard and mustache trimmer with 9 length settings, 3 titanium-coated blades, and powered by a Lithium Ion battery. It is easy to clean because you can wash it down after every use and the blades do not require oiling or sharpening.

The MB4040 has 3 detachable heads for precision stubble, goatee, or mustache trimming. Handling is easy because of the ergonomic design, rotary dial, and the power behind the battery. You have more cordless use than ordinary trimmers which usually give you less than an hour of cordless use. The MB 4040, which has a 2 year warranty, gives you 120 minutes cordless use and can be fully recharged in 3 hours.

On the downside, you risk cutting yourself if you remove the guard and use the trimmer directly especially for the beard because this blade has wider-spaced tines. A clean trim is not always possible except if you run the trimmer over the same spot several times especially if you are trimming stubble. Finally, some minor issues you may have to contend with are hair pulling, flimsy attachments, and uneven trims.

Summary

If you are looking for an occasional tool to trim your beard, goatee, mustache or stubble, the MV 4040 is a good choice. It isn’t without its flaws but they are minor and compensated by a powerful battery and excellent torque. You also get longer cordless time and less unnecessary attachments to work with.

Pros

  • Lithium Ion battery with 120 minutes cordless use
  • Two year warranty
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons

  • Flimsy attachments that can break if not used with care
  • A clean trim will need several runs

Philips Consumer Lifestyle QT4014 Beard Mustache Trimmer

Philips Norelco BeardTrimmer 3500The Philips Consumer Lifestyle QT 4014 Beard and Mustache Trimmer is a nice styling tool to have with its titanium coated blades that are self-sharpening, 20 built-in length settings, rechargeable NiMH battery and locking mechanism to prevent the comb from self-adjusting. It’s not the best in the market but it will get the job done adequately well.

Philips Consumer Lifestyle QT 4014 Review

The Philips Consumer Lifestyle QT 4014 Beard and Mustache Trimmer will do an acceptable job in trimming your facial hair. It has 20 length setting starting at 0.5 mm to 10mm. It uses a regular comb as compared to a contouring comb and has a self-locking device to prevent the comb from dislodging while in use.

The NiMH battery can handle cordless use of up to 50 minutes and a recharging time of 60 minutes. You can wet this trimmer to clean it but you will have to be careful to dry it completely before using it again. You can use it though while it is plugged in.

The self-sharpening blades of the QT 4014 are titanium-plated with rounded edges to prevent skin irritation. It claims to have an ergonomic design that is easy to grip but it is a little clumsy and difficult to get used to. For instance, the Power button is located at an unusual angle.

Without a contouring comb, you will have problems with precision styling. However, it comes with a plastic guard that you can adjust and it is light which makes it easy to maneuver for quick trims. You will need to apply consistent pressure on the plastic guard for a neat trim.

The QT 4014 is also quiet with just a little vibration. Overall, the QT 4014 is a handy styling tool with more pluses than minuses. You eve have the option of extended warranty.

Summary

The Philips QT 4014 is recommended as long as you are willing to overlook a few design flaws like the Power button and the lack of a contouring comb. You will like the rounded titanium-plated blades and the easy maintenance. It has 20 built-in length settings and can deliver an almost professional job with enough practice.

Pros

  • Titanium-coated rounded blades for safety and cut-free use
  • 20 built-in length settings
  • Easy maintenance

Cons

  • No contouring comb
  • A design that you may find difficult to use initially
  • There have been a few issues with the battery such as not charging

Wahl Professional 8685 Peanut Classic Clipper White

Wahl Professional 8685 Peanut Classic Clipper WhiteThe Wahl Professional 8685 Peanut Classic Clipper in white is the first of the 3 Peanut products from Wahl, the others being black and cordless. The white Peanut is a handy, lightweight grooming tool that does a good job in spite of limited trimming guides and the need to oil before using. It is worth buying as it has a reputation for durability and long life.

Review of the Wahl Professional 8685 Peanut Classic Clipper White

The white Peanut Classic Clipper from Wahl is a reliable grooming tool that is safe for children and daily use. It is a corded clipper which means you need to plug it in but you will have the advantage of full and steady power. You might not even notice the corded feature since the cord is lengthy and allows you to move around easily while using it.

It is recommended that you oil the clipper before using it and after you clean it. It should be cleaned immediately after being used. It is not dual volt and will need a converter if you have 220-240 volts.

In comparison to other clippers, the shave is acceptable but not as good as a blade. However, it is fast and will not clip or nick you. It will also not promote ingrown hair, pull on your hair, or require blade replacement even after years of daily use.

It is noisy and the thicker your hair is, the noisier it gets. You should work in sections and avoid cutting from bottom up. There have been cases of power failure but it could be because it was plugged in 220 volt. The Peanut Classic Clipper is made in the USA and targets US market. Finally, with only 4 length settings, it is limited.

Summary

The Wahl Peanut Classic Clipper in white is a good grooming tool that is safe for children. It accepts only 110 volt and has only 4 length settings but it is a workhorse and is very efficient. You need to practice with it to get it right but once you do, it will perform very well.

Good Points

  • Light and compact
  • Easy to use and will last for years with proper use
  • Corded

Bad Points

  • Does not shave clean
  • Requires daily oiling if you use it regularly
  • Can be difficult to clean

Physical Features

Weight: 4 ounces

Size: 1.8 x 1.8 x 4 inches

Philips Norelco QT 4070

Philips Norelco QT 4070The Philips Norelco QT 4070 is a trimmer tool targeting frequent users of trimmers. It has a unique vacuum system to eliminate the expected mess from trimming and 18 locked-in length settings from 1/32 to 23/32 inches. It is a practical tool to have around but it isn’t an all-around tool which means you will still need to buy a shaver to complete your grooming set. Take a look at the others in the range of Philips beard trimmers.

The Philips Norelco QT 4070 is a trimmer tool targeting frequent users of trimmers. It is a practical tool to have around but it isn’t an all-around tool which means you will still need to buy a shaver to complete your grooming set. Take a look at the others in the range of Philips beard trimmers.

Review of the Norelco QT4070

The Philips Norelco QT 4070 trimmer with integrated vacuum system is perfect for frequent use in trimming stubble and beard. It has a mess-free technology, 18 length settings, adjustable comb, multifunction display, turbo power button, and Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. Is it good?

With all its features, it doesn’t manage to get very high ratings for several reasons.

One, it cannot be washed. You clean it with a brush that comes with the product. However, it does not require oiling and the blades need no sharpening.

Two, the battery provides the average 50 minute cordless use which is nothing spectacular since there are lithium ion batteries that have a longer cordless use.

Three, the vacuum system will only catch 90% of the mess but it is still a good percent less cleaning to be done after use. The QT 4070 does an efficient trimming job at a steady pace because of the turbo power even with thick hair. Four, this product is currently under review by Amazon for specific issues of seller shipping, marketing, and inventory. However, there are other sellers you can turn to as alternates. Finally, the combs are sharp and can make even trimming difficult.

On the upside, it comes with a travel lock and quick charging system. Once you get used to the grooming tool, you may decide to keep using it because it does an acceptable job most of the time.

Summary

The Philips QT 4070 is a beard, stubble, and mustache trimmer for frequent use. It has a vacuum system that prevents mess, at least up to 90%. Its main problem is the comb design with sharp tines so if you can get past this issue, you will enjoy clean trims as often as necessary.

Main Good Points

  • Vacuum cleaning system
  • 18 length settings with no sharpening, no oiling necessary
  • Turbo power

Main Bad Points

  • Sharp tines
  • Cannot be washed or cleaned with water
  • Vacuum system is only 90% efficient

Conair GMT900 iStubble Facial Trimmer

Conair GMT900 iStubble Facial TrimmerThe Conair iStubble Facial Trimmer with a floating contouring head and electronic length control is a grooming tool specific for facial hair. It can manage a 0.4 mm trim, has dual battery system, and LCD display. It performs better than many other trimming tools in the market. In spite of minor flaws in design and it is a good product to buy.

Review of Conair GMT900 iStubble

The Conair iStubble Facial Trimmer is the grooming tool you can depend on to keep your facial hair perfectly styled. Done properly, you will not have to use the iStubble everyday and if you love the shadow effect, this is the styling tool to own.

The iStubble has 15 length settings starting at 0.4 mm to 5.0 mm which is digitally programmed. It comes with a contoured head for precision trimming and a safety features that prevents nicks and cuts. The dual battery system and quick charging system is a little complicated because it requires an initial 10 to 12 hour. However, once you get past this initial stage, it works very well. It can be used corded or cordless and has an LCD display to let you know when the charge is running low.

The trimmer does an excellent job although the guide comb can dislodge occasionally in spite of being able to prevent skin irritation and rashes. The comb can also break with heavy use or thick hair. You will also be disappointed with the cost of the replacement blades which are almost like buying a new trimmer. Another downside is the cleaning and maintenance which is messy because of the lack of a “catch basin” for the hair.

Summary

The Conair iStubble Facial Trimmer is attractive, modern-looking, and does a good job of trimming facial hair especially for achieving that alluring 5 o’clock shadow. There are minor issues with the initial battery charge and a weak guiding comb, but with care and patience, it becomes a non-issue. It’s not a versatile styling and grooming tool but it is a good trimmer.

Braun Cruzer 6 Beard and Head Trimmer 1 Count

Braun Cruzer 6 Beard and Head Trimmer 1 CountThe Braun Cruzer 6 Beard and Head Trimmer 1 Count is styling trimmer for facial hair. However, it is possible to use it on body hair except it will not do a clean shave, even at lowest setting. It has dual battery with a 6 setting beard comb and a 6 setting hair comb. It isn’t an all-around grooming tool and you might still have to go to your barber for your regular haircuts.

Braun Cruzer 6 Review

The lightweight Braun Cruzer 6 Beard and Head Trimmer 1 Count is a great tool for beard even tough and thick hair. It has stainless steel blades and 2 adjustable combs for beard and hair trims. The beard comb can cover 1 to 11 mm settings while the hair comb ranges between 10 to 20 mm. Its short charge dual battery system means it can be used corded or as a cordless with 40 minutes charge time. Additionally, it has worldwide voltage system of 120 -240 volts and 50 to 60 Hz. You will need to get the European adapter if you plan on traveling to Europe.

Using this trimmer is satisfying because it isn’t noisy nor does it vibrate excessively. Although it looks a little flimsy, the Braun 6 can handle a lot of abuse including being dropped, without breaking down. The attachmeents can easily break and these should be handled with care.

On the downside, the Braun 6 is not a shaver and although you can try using it to shave, it will not give you a clean shave. While you can fully wash the trimmer to clean it, it will requires oiling once in 2 to 3 months, or whenever necessary. Fortunately, the product comes with a small bottle of oil. For thick beard and facial hair, the trimmer can get clogged but to remedy this, all you need to do is remove the comb and wash it down. Finally, the power is low which means you will need to run the trimmer several times to get a clean trim.

Summary

The Braun 6 is a trimming tool specific for beards and mustaches although it can trim hair adequately well. It will not give you a good shave and is underpowered which means you will need to run it through several times. As a trimmer, it is adequate but not excellent.

Pros

  • Completely washable
  • The tool itself can handle heavy wear and tear and keep running
  • Covers worldwide voltage at 110-240, 50 to 60 Hz

Philips Norelco T980

The Philips Norelco T980 is a trimmerPhilips Norelco T980 with rechargeable turbo vacuum whose outstanding reputation precedes it. It isn’t uncommon to find men who “settled” for another model because the T980 is unavailable. If you can find this model, grab it. It may have minor flaws but appears to perform better than other Philips Norelco products within this price range.

Review of the Philips Norelco T980

The Philips Norelco T980 is a rechargeable trimmer with a turbo vacuum that is over 80% efficient and outstanding trimming results. The vacuum has a see-through chamber which gives you an idea when to clean out the chamber and this eliminates unnecessary cleaning and optimizes the performance of the vacuum by avoiding clogging. The vacuum is even able to deflect hair from bothering you as you trim your hair.

The T980 has 9 lock-in length settings, flexible head, a turbo boost for 30% more power, and self-sharpening blades. Attachments include a flexible contouring comb and a mini beard trimmer. Philips offers the T980 customers a 60 day money back guarantee and a full 2 year warranty.

If you turn on the turbo power, you only get 30 minutes of cordless use. However, the T980 can be used as it is being charged so there really isn’t any inconvenience unless there is no outlet nearby. Another problem would be trimming nose hair because the unit is too large for this function. In addition, using the T980 will not work as well if you have wet hair. The vacuum will not be able to collect the cut hair. Finally, the rechargeable battery is hard to replace if it goes dead and the T980 is currently not available on Amazon.

Summary

The Philips Norelco T980 is one grooming and trimming tool for beard and stubble that is currently not available in Amazon yet has a long waiting list of eager customers. Its reputation is that of a reliable, not too noisy, efficient, low maintenance machine. Its main downfall is that it does not work well with wet hair and you only get 30 minutes of cordless use.

Good Points

  • Excellent trimmer for beard and stubble because of the flexible contouring comb
  • Good vacuum with clear see-thru chamber
  • Can be used while being charged

Bad Points

  • Vacuum is not 100% efficient
  • A little noisy on turbo mode
  • Battery is not lithium ion

Philips Norelco QS6160 Style Razor Pro

Philips Norelco QS6160 Style Razor ProThe Philips Norelco QS6160 Style Razor Pro is a dual-ended grooming took for facial hair. It has 12 settings with medium to large full metal guards for accurate styling and trimming. It has a travel lock and pouch and operates with a Lithium ion battery. The concept is great except the execution needs improvement. There are razors with more features, although the current 50% discount is rather enticing.

Review of Philips Norelco QS6160

The Philips Norelco QS 6160 Style Razor Pro is a facial grooming tool which allows you to create specific styles as well as trim and shave. It comes with a 2 year full warranty and 45 days money back guarantee. It has a beard comb with 12 settings so you can choose what to do with your facial hair from removing stubble to creating a goatee, sideburns, or elegant mustache. It is powered by the quick charge Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. This dual volt, 50-60 Hz product comes with one beard comb, charging stand, one detail comb, manual, and pouch. It has a head that swivels well and an excellent physical design that looks heavy-duty without being heavy.

The Style Razor Pro appears to be the ultimate grooming tool unfortunately there have been more than several claims of unclean shaves and the need to run the razor over the same area several times to remove the short stubs. This leads to skin irritation and lengthier shaving time.

Also, Philips has stated that the QS 6160 can be used for wet and dry styling; many buyers have expressed hesitation about using it in the shower claiming that it is only water-resistant, not waterproof. There is another problem of the foil razor pulling on hair causing minor scratches or cuts.

Summary

The Philips Norelco Style Razor QS 6160 looks impressive and is a grooming tool for daily use. It does not pull hair from the roots and can sometimes leave behind short stubbles. It does a good job in trimming hair and has 12 lengths for specialized trims for sideburns, beards, and mustache.

Pros

  • It is on 50% discount
  • Quick charge Lithium Ion battery
  • Excellent facial hair trimmer

Cons

  • Does not always give a clean shave and may require several runs
  • The foil razor can pull hair and cause minor cuts
  • It remains questionable whether it can be used in the shower

Philips Norelco QS 6140 StyleRazor

Philips Norelco QS 6140 StyleRazorThe Philips Norelco QS 6140 StyleRazor is a snazzy-looking trimming and shaving tool for facial hair. It has 12 length settings, 2 sizes of metal guard trimmers, a triple action foil shaver, and Lithium Ion battery for power and torque. It would be a perfect styling tool if not for the fact that the shaver underperforms and is messy to use.

Review of the Norelco QS6140

The Philips Norelco QS 6140 StyleRazor looks amazing. It serves a dual purpose of trimming and shaving although the shaving function tends to lag behind. You get 12 length settings, 2 metal guards (medium and large) for detailing, and the triple action foil shaver. It uses the modern Lithium Ion rechargeable battery which delivers high torque and power.

The idea of a one-in-all styling tool is commendable except that it falters occasionally especially with the shave function. On the upside, the QS 6140 is easy to use, not too heavy, has a comfortable grip, and does an acceptable job at maintaining your beard and mustache. Unfortunately, you will have problems getting a clean, smooth shave. Also, there is a flaw in the design of the charging cradle which wobbles. When charging the battery, you will need to keep the QS 6140 on the cradle which means you cannot use it while it is charging. It is also not recommended to use the QS 6140 in the shower although you can rinse it after use. While using the QS 6140, you will be surprised to see shaved or trimmed hair particles flying out of the trimmer and scattering around.

In summary, it still is more of a trimmer than a shaver even if you don’t have to remove or attach anything to switch functions.

Summary

The Philips Norelco QS 6140 StyleRazor is more of a trimmer than a shaver. It comes with a 2 year warranty and 45 day money back guarantee. Its main plus is the trimming function while its main downfall is the charging system which requires the tool to be on the charging dock while charging. For this price range, it is one choice to consider but there are better shavers around.

Main Good Points

  • Smart-looking and modern design
  • All-in-one tool for trimming, styling, and shaving
  • Powered by Lithium Ion rechargeable battery

Main Bad Points

  • Cannot be used while charging
  • Does not always give you a clean, smooth shave
